Coordination is not a separate function of management, it is the very essence of management because : –
- Planning – In planning, coordination is required between overall plan of the organization and the department’s objectives ,the available resources as well as planning.
For example : Coordination between production Department plans and sales Department targets.
- Organizing – Coordination is required for resources of an enterprise and the activities to be performed. For assigning authority, responsibility and accountability, as well, coordination is needed.
For example: If the finance manager is given authority to raise funds, he should also be given the responsibility to manage the funds efficiently.
- Staffing – Coordination is needed between the skills of the workers and the jobs assigned to them. Also, the efficiency of the workers and the compensation is linked with coordination.
For example : A CA should generally be given work of a financial nature.
- Directing – Coordination is required amongst orders, instructions, suggestions, superiors as well as subordinates.
For example: A manager instructs the subordinates motivates and supervises his work.
- Controlling – Coordination is needed between standards of performance and the actual performance which is being delivered. Moreover, coordination helps figure out the gaps and provides corrections for deviations and helps in achievement of objectives.
For example: If the planned target is 100 units of output and the actual output is 90 units, then corrective action is taken to ensure that the plans coordinate with actual performance.
Hence coordination is indispensable in all managerial functions.
