AN INTERVIEW WITH PATTY WISEMAN
I always wanted to be a writer, but life got in the way. Husband, children, job. It wasn’t until I was 60 that I retired and started on my quest to publish a book. Now I have nine books published and ready to launch my tenth.
I live in Woodlawn, Texas with my husband Ron and our dog, Cutter. Between us we have three grown children and eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. I’ve been the president of the East Texas Writers Association for the past three years and now have stepped down to Vice President to focus on my writing more.
Are you happy about being an Author?
I am thrilled to be an Author, BUT, it’s so discouraging that it costs so much for promotion and getting your name out there. It seems everyone wants a piece of your book until it ends up you make almost nothing. We have to live too. I would love to learn how to do promotion without it costing an arm and a leg.
I am on a fixed income, so it is very important that I am careful with whom I put my trust in. I’ve had to learn by hard knocks in the last ten years. Not fun.
What's your motivation as an author and what have you learnt from writing books?
My motivation is to help others to realize the dream of becoming published. My books have progressed from entertainment for the reader to really dealing with the issues of the day as in my latest book.
Silver’s Redemption. The main character is a fifty-six-year- old woman who finds herself out of a job after a twenty year career as a PR exec. Replaced by a twenty something bombshell. She takes a hard journey to find her self-worth again.
As an author , what do you think are the positive things about your writings?
The positive thing is how I champion women in my books. I come from a line of strong women in my family and I show that in my characters.

What's your advice for budding authors?
Oh, I would definitely say take some online writing courses. These helped me a great deal. Also, join a writer’s group. Most cities have local writer’s groups, just google them.
Hanging out with fellow author’s is a huge benefit. Also, don’t let the trolls out there discourage you. They have nothing better to do.
Don’t give up!
Do you believe in "Writer's Block"?
I really don’t think I believe in writer’s block. I think if you do writer sprints, leave your manuscript for a while then come back, join a critique group who can get you back on track, that you can refresh your mind without too much frustration.
What are the problems that you have faced in your Author journey?
Well, money is one. It costs to have an editor, a cover artist, doing promotion. It seems the writer does all the work, but a lot of these other entities get paid a lot more than we do. It costs so much to publish a book.
Another problem is jealousy, people who don’t want to share their expertise with you, things they learned, but keep to themselves. I’m a sharer. I tell everyone the new things I learned. It gives me joy to help someone else.
What Genre of Books do you create and Why you chose it ?
What advice would you give to your younger self ?
Don’t wait! I could have started much younger. I wish I would have listened to that inner voice!
Do you prefer more of an original flow or stick to what readers want?
Oh, that’s a good question. I go for original every time, but I also use elements of what I know the reader wants. It makes my voice unique.
