Management and profession have always been treated independently.There have always been clashing views on both being the same.Management and profession are for sure interlinked when it comes to certain principles.However, Management does not meet the criteria of a full-fledged profession. However, people are recognizing the importance of management, and it is on a fast track of becoming one.
Management and profession – The extent of fulfillment of criteria of profession are:
- Systematic body of knowledge: Like profession, management is also systematic body of knowledge comprising of well-defined principles. Today, different colleges and professional institutions are providing management education at a large level both online and offline.
- Restricted entry: Every profession has a restricted entry, that is easy to say, to practice however it is much difficult. Similarly, to practice a particular profession one has to clear an examination or acquire an educational degree. Although, in the field of management also, there are degrees like MBA, but it is not mandatory for a manager to possess specific degrees. So, this criterion is not completely met.
- Professional Association : Professions have their professional associations which lay down code of conduct for their members. Management has All India Management Association (AIMA) as its professional Association, but neither is it mandatory for every manager to be a member of such associations nor does it have any statutory backing.
- Code of conduct : Every profession has some code of conduct for its members which is compulsory to be followed AIMA has also laid down the code of conduct but it is not compulsory for the managers to follow it.
