USA Laws – Must Knows

Read Time: 2 minutes

The Laws in USA have many types of codified and uncodified laws starting with the United States Constitution. The United State Constitution creates the boundaries for various federal laws, state laws and local laws. Most of the laws in USA are often created by the Congress and the state legislative bodies and these are called “statutes”.  Statutes are enforced or put into action by the federal and state courts.

Statues or these federal laws are initiated by introducing a bill by a member of the Senate or anyone from the house of representatives, which are further referred to a standing committee and other sub committees for further study. Later it is moved forward to the senate and house for vote and debate on the bill. Once both the house and the senate comes forward with the changes in the bill, they hold a joint conference where both of the senate and house comes to an agreement about the bill. After the bill has been approved by both the senate and the house, it is sent to the President of the United States. If the President of the United States agrees with it and signs it, it becomes a law.

State legislatures can also pass or create laws for matters which share common jurisdiction with the congress and in most of the other matters the jurisdiction is exclusively reserved to the federal government. The state can also pass and create laws in matters which the constitution doesn’t provide jurisdiction to the federal government.

The courts in USA enforces these USA laws and helps in the interpretation of such laws. They also help in validating these statutes and remove the ones which are invalid and unconstitutional. The courts in united states also make laws which are not covered by the statutes. The main roles played by courts in the USA are. (I) Enforcement of law (II) Interpretation of law (III) Invalidation of law (IV) making of common law.
