It is important to know classroom rules for online learning, now that classes are taking place online on zoom, Webex or Skype. Communication is a little different in an online class than in a face-to-face environment. The main difference is that most communication in an online environment is mostly through written text. This implies that body language signals and direct input from your listener are lacking. So it is very important to understand some classroom rules for online learning. This guarantees the proper receipt of the message you wish to convey. Some classroom rules for online learning that should be followed during online study courses are given below:

Be respectful-  Without standing face-to-face with others, it is easier to say hurtful or offensive things. But your peers and teachers are real people who are influenced by the words you say and write. According to classroom rules for online learning, you should be respectful and bear in mind others’ emotions and thoughts. If you are not going to say it to anyone’s face, do not even say it online.

Be careful of strong language, all caps, and points of exclamation- It is easy to misread and misinterpret the written text. Have you ever sent a good-intention text message but your receiver felt you were being rude? If so, this is something you have encountered beforehand. Before sending messages, you can recognize possible confusion by being aware of strong language. Before you submit, try reading it out loud.

Be careful with humor and sarcasm- You certainly should not stop being funny. In online courses, we love to see your personality come through. Some of our teachers are also extraordinarily humorous. But as described before, make sure it is obvious that you are funny and not rude. When conveying humor or sarcasm so that it is read right, emoticons and smileys may be helpful. Only note to stay away from academic articles with smiley faces.
