According to Harold Koontz Ann Heinz Weihrich “Management is the process of designing and maintaining an environment in which individuals working together in groups, efficiently accomplish selected aims.”
In other words management is the process of working with and through others to affectively achieve organizational objectives by efficiently using limited resources in the changing environment.
The two most important characteristics of management are:
- It is a goal oriented process.
- It is a continuous process.
Management is a multifaceted concept as it deals with managing the work , people and operations. It translates the work in terms of goals and assigns means to achieve them. It deals with employees as individuals with diverse needs and behavior, simultaneously, it makes them work towards achieving the organization’s goals by making their strengths effective and their weakness is irrelevant.
Further, it manages operations through which the inputs are converted into output. The nature of management adds to its complexity.
The key features which indicates management close to profession are:
- A systematic body of knowledge – Like other professions, management is taken up as a subject and is taught at different institutions . The principles of management are still evolving and new principles are being established.
- Professional Association – All professions have an Association that regulates it. Management too has a representative body that is all India management association or (AIMA) which lays down a code of conduct to regulate the activities of their members.
- Service motive – All professions have service motive. Management aims at achievement of organizational goals this is made possible by serving the society with good quality products at reasonable prices.
